The Heart of a Teacher

Dr. Ann Payne-Johnson grew up in New Orleans and moved to Tennessee for medical training at the University of Tennessee’s Family Practice Residency Program in Jackson. With the help of The Rural Partnership, she has established her practice at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women in Memphis, where she is meeting her professional goal, “to work in a multi-disciplinary group, educating families on prevention of disease and teaching family life skills.” Furthermore, her training allowed her to focus on patients throughout all points of the lifecycle.

One of her passions in patient care is advocating breastfeeding. Dr. Payne-Johnson supports education with pre-natal patients, assignment of newborns to her care, and counsel with new mothers of the importance of breastfeeding babies in the first year of life. Taking time with her patients ensures that Dr. Payne-Johnson imparts understanding of disease conditions, their prevention and treatment, to those in her care.
